A sensitive and delicate bright green fern with dark stems and fan-like leaves that grows in the shade next to rivers in its natural environment. It has no flowers, likes even temperature and very high humidity (1-2 hours morning or evening sun). Use a pebble tray or humidifier and plant in peat moss or coconut coir.
Thrives best in a terrarium or in a bathroom with enough light and no draught. Use diluted amounts of liquid fertilizer during summer months after watering. The fern also prefers being root bound so don’t repot too quickly and only to one size larger pot with a loose rich compost with perlite. To propagate in early spring, divide plant leaving rhizomes (roots) attached to fronds, or by spores under the leaves, but this takes many months to get to germinate.
Prone to draughts, dryness, root rot which results in dry, browning or yellowing of leaves.
Adiantum tenerum ‘Scutum Roseum’: An evergreen fern with pink and green foliage. To grow well, it prefers bright shade – shade and even moisture – regular water. Grows best in well-drained, rich, average and alkaline soil. In need of something humidity tolerant and verticillium wilt resistant? This may be a good option.
